Microsoft Advertising understands that collecting Personally Identifiable Information (PII) can be an essential practice to many advertisers; PII enables advertisers to deliver targeted and specific content. However, when collecting PII, Microsoft advertisers must ensure that they follow adCenter guidelines for privacy in order to be compliant. These guidelines exist to protect our users and ensure that our marketplace is safe and easy to use. This post is meant to answer the most common questions about our PII guidelines to help ensure that your advertising is compliant:
Q: What is considered personally identifiable information? A: PII is any information which can potentially be used to uniquely identify, contact, or locate a single person. Examples of PII include, but are not limited to, the following:
- First and last name
- Cell Phone number
- Email address
- Mailing address
- Credit card number
- Social security number
- Driver’s license number
- Clearly states the reason why the information is being collected.
- Includes an explicit option for site visitors to opt out of any future communication, email or otherwise.
- Clearly and prominently includes the name of the company that is collecting the personal information.
Q: Are there any other adCenter guidelines to be aware of in regards to PII collection? A: Yes, sites whose primary purpose is to collect PII are disallowed by Microsoft adCenter Quality and Relevance Guidelines. A site cannot collect PII that is unnecessary or irrelevant to the offer/service/purchase.
